Stephen Graham has revealed whether the Netflix drama series, "Adolescence," could return for a second season.
The series, which has gained huge viewership and much popularity within its first two weeks of broadcast, depicts the aftermath after a 13-year-old is accused of murdering his classmate.
Written by Graham and Jack Thorne, the script touches on contemporary themes of the negative impacts that social media has on young people and teenagers, while also understanding the impact of bullying on society.
In an interview with Variety, Graham and executive producer Hannah Walters, who are married in real life, discussed the possibility of the series' future as more and more viewers tune in to it on Netflix. Graham said:
"Let's see how the numbers go" - referring to the series' huge success so far - adding that "there is potential for another story to develop".
Walters commented that it would be difficult to create a worthy sequel to the series, given the huge impact it has already had, but added that he wants to continue the partnership with Netflix.
However, there was one option that categorically ruled it out:
"A sequel to Adolescence is definitely not going to happen. But there's a long way to go to reinvest in human nature and see/create something different."
So, perhaps this series may not have a proper sequel, but another story will be created that also touches on social themes, having the same impact on viewers.
