Actress was pregnant when she died at the age of 24, death certificate confirms

Sophie Nyweide was pregnant when she died suddenly at the age of 24 on Monday, April 14.

The actress's death certificate shows that she was pregnant. It's not known how far along she was in her pregnancy, but a source told People that Nyweide was only a few weeks along.

Nyweide, whose legal name was Marion S. Nyweide, was found unconscious in a wooded area near the banks of the Roaring Branch River in Bennington, Vermont, on the morning of April 14. An unidentified person was with the former star at the time of her death and called 911 at 4:10 a.m. Emergency responders attempted to save her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:53 a.m.

Authorities confirmed on Wednesday, April 23, that Nyweide's death is being investigated as a "possible accidental overdose."

"In memory of Sophie. A life cut short too soon. Let us learn from her short life and try to do better. Yes, we must protect our children and do better," her obituary read.

In the last years of her life, Sophie faced great emotional and spiritual challenges. Her family stressed that she suffered from trauma and feelings of shame, which had led her to resort to self-medication. Despite the efforts of relatives and professionals to help her, she often refused treatment and tried to manage her pain independently. This self-medication, according to the family, was a contributing factor to the tragedy of her loss.

Sophie is survived by her mother, Shelley Gibson, a former actress, and her brother, Huck.

In lieu of gifts or flowers, the family has asked that those wishing to express their condolences make contributions to RAINN — the largest U.S. organization against sexual violence — in Sophie's name. A memorial service for her has not yet been scheduled.
