A 19-year-old accused of slaughtering parents and three siblings was punished this Thursday with five consecutive eternal sentences, meaning that he would never win freedom again even if he wants parole.
Michael Bever was 16 years old in 2015 when he and his older brother, Robert Bever, killed their mother, father, two brothers and five-year-old sister in Tulsa. The other two sisters survived the attack.
Robert Bever, who was 18 at that time, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life imprisonment without a conditional release. Michael Bever was arrested in May for five counts of premeditated murder.
Michael Bever was also convicted of deliberately murdered attempts at his then-surviving 13-year-old sister. One of the sisters, 2 years old, was not injured. On Thursday, Bever was sentenced to 28 years in prison for attacking his 13-year-old sister, adding five life sentences.
Authorities have not disclosed the motives of adolescents.
Neighbors said that children were all shy of them at home and that their parents kept close to them, not allowing them to play with other children or spend time with their neighbors.
After the attack, Robert Bever said his parents beat him. He said once, his father dragged him to the second floor because he had left a light on, while his mother hit him so hard that he remained a sign. He explained to authorities how he planned killing parents and brothers and sisters in the hope that the killings would make him famous.
Lawyers say Michael Bever was influenced by his brother, while Robert Bever testified that he wanted to take full responsibility for the murders.
Lawyers intend to appeal the decision.
