Police in St. Petersburg have arrested prominent Russian historian Oleg Sokolov after he was caught throwing the wings of his former student's body in the river.

Local media reported that the 63-year-old St. Petersburg State University professor was caught drunk while trying to throw the arms of Anastasia Yeshchenko, 24, on the river Moika.
The late 24-year-old is thought to have been Sokolov's girlfriend. He told investigators he shot "his girlfriend after an argument". According to records, the 63-year-old broke the body of the former student, with whom he had collaborated for several studies.
In his house, a blood-stained saw was found.
The historian is the author of several books known for leading Napoleon Bonaparte. He is a member of the French Institute of Social Science, Economics and Politics (ISSEP). ISSEP announced in a statement that he no longer enjoys the post.
In 2003, Sokolov was honored by France with the Legion of Honor, the highest title for military and civilian merit, founded in 1802 by Bonaparte.
