In his memoir book, Woody Allen says he married his wife, Soon-Yi Previn, for financial reasons.
"In terms of marriage, neither of us had any desire to formalize the relationship," Allen writes in his book Apropos of Nothing. ?We both thought that no contract would be worth the rent if the parties were not happy. We loved each other and didn't need the law. We wouldn't get married. Then we got married. Why? Not for romantic reasons, but only for financial reasons. ?
Referring to the 35-year-old age difference, Allen, 84, reads: ?I loved Soon-Yi and knew I was many times older than her and that I could die from moment to moment. If that were the case, I wanted it to be protected, to inherit all that I had without any problems. "
Allen and Previn, 49, married secretly in Venice in December 1997.
"Even though we were married for practicality, the wedding was very romantic," he writes, adding that the mayor would secretly marry them in his office and in the presence of Allen's sister and close friend. After comparing himself to James Bond, Allen explains that he left the hotel separately and got a gondola to get to the destination.
After getting married in a private room, the couple returned to the hotel separately, following different paths.
"When we entered the suite, we heard the phone," he writes. ?It was Page Six from The Post. They had heard that we were married in Venice. I looked under the bed before consuming the wedding. Two days later we went for a honeymoon at the Ritz in Paris and within 48 hours we had been proclaimed worldwide. Soon-yi and I were a man and a woman. "
In 1977, Mia Farrow and her ex-husband André Previn adopted Soon-Yi Previn from Seoul, South Korea. The girl was abandoned and was supposed to be between 5-7 years old. Two years after adoption, Farrow became associated with Allen. During this relationship, Allen developed a relationship with Soon-Yi and spent a lot of time with him. In 1992, Farrow found nude photos of Soon-Yi in Allen's apartment. He said the photos were taken two weeks after having sex with Soon-Yi for the first time.
After the scandal broke, Allen said he did not consider himself a stepfather of Soon-Yi, since he and Farrow never married. ?I never slept in Mia's apartment and didn't even go there until my children were raised. I was not the father of her adopted children in any sense of the word, ?the director said. Allen added that Soon-Yi had never treated her as a paternal figure and could hardly speak to them before they were related. Allen has no problem with their relationship.
Today, Woody Allen and Soon-Yi Previn live in Manhattan and have adopted two children.
