According to some documents presented in court, it is alleged that Elton John's ex-wife created a new identity and hid in a British village, in an attempt to dismiss the relationship with the singer.
Renate Blauel is seeking £ 3m in damages claiming he caused her deep psychological distress and violated the 1988 divorce agreement stating that she should not discuss their marriage.
Last month, The Guardian revealed that Blauel has been trying to evade public attention for the past three decades. She has filed a lawsuit against her ex-husband, right after the publication of Elton John's biography, "Me", as well as the accompanying film, "Rocketman". The legal files submitted to the court by her lawyers claim:
- Blauel changed his name and got a new identity in order to get rid of the old connection.
- In 2001, she told friends and acquaintances that she was going to live with her parents in Germany, but actually hid in a British village
- Blauel, in an attempt to avoid the press in the UK, bought a house in name of a friend and hid any clues as Elton John's ex-wife.
John and Renate Blauel were married in Australia in 1984, at a time when the singer was struggling with his sexuality. According to Blauel, when they separated, a clause was placed in the divorce agreement stating that neither party would discuss "marriage and the reasons for separation."
She says she "tried to have children during their relationship but were unable to do so", contrary to John's claims that he did not want a family until she met her current husband, David Furnish.
Blauel's lawyers claim that she, because of the relationship, has struggled with mental health for a long time, which includes: recurring nightmares, anxiety, depression, fear. The publication of the autobiography and the film, according to Renate Blauel, has violated the clause in the divorce agreement.
Elton John's lawyers, on the other hand, argue that many aspects of their marriage were already known and the reasons for their divorce were already public - that is, he was a gay man who wanted to be in a relationship with a man. They also said it was impossible for Elton John to take responsibility for Blauel's mental health as she had had problems long before the release of "Rocketman" and his autobiography.
