Is sleeping next to a cell phone harmful: Here's what the experts say

If you are reading this, you are probably one of the many people who keep their cell phone nearby in bed or in the adjoining commode when they sleep.

A Bank of America report for 2015 found that 71% of people sleep with or near their phones.

We often talk about the damage that this brings: brainwashing with radio waves or various health damage.

In November 2018, the National Toxicology Program, by the U.S. government, completed a 10-year, $ 30 million study on the health effects of exposure to cellular radiation. Basically, government scientists, experimented with mice, exposing them to different levels of radiofrequency (RFR) radiation for different lengths of time, and then they saw what would happen.

"Our studies show that the presence of radiation in telecommunications equipment can produce adverse biological effects," said John Bucher, one of the study's authors and a senior scientist at the National Institutes of Health.

In particular, Bucher's study found "clear evidence" of tumors in the hearts of male mice and, in some others, tumors in the adrenal glands and brain. The trials did not turn out the same in female rats, meaning that it was not clear whether the tumors that appeared were caused by RFR exposure.

However, Bucher says there may be some "low" risk when a phone is held over the head or body. He says these risks could increase with "prolonged and continuous use". However, not everyone thinks so.

"If there is a risk, I think it is minimal. "We have not seen an increase in brain tumors since the increase in cell phone use," said Larry Junck, a neuro-oncologist and professor of neurology at the University of Michigan.

Brain tumors are not the only concern for cell phone users. Other researchers raise suspicions about exposures to neck and thyroid tumors. Thyroid cancer rates have tripled in the last three decades and are growing faster than any other type of cancer, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS).

However, there is still no concrete evidence that for many of these cases of the disease, cell phones are to blame. It seems that it remains difficult for science to determine exactly and uniformly the effects of cell phones on human health.
