What to do if you accidentally left the menstrual cup too long?

One of the benefits of using menstrual cups is that you do not have to think about periods for hours, but it can also be a disadvantage because you happen to forget to remove it.

For how many hours is it safe to hold a menstrual cup?

Gynecologist Amy Roskin says the general recommendation is that you can leave a menstrual cup for 8-12 hours.

"If there is a leak, or if you are experiencing a severe leak, you should definitely take it out sooner to clean it," she suggests.

What to do if you accidentally leave it longer?

Dr. Roskin says:

"Just take out the menstrual cup and clean it thoroughly. The risk of infection or "shock" is small because menstrual cups are generally made of silicone or rubber and are not as absorbent as tampons. However, this does not entitle you to leave it for longer than it should on purpose. Put a reminder on your phone to remove it at the end of the day.

If you leave it for too long (several days), there is an increased risk for infections. If this happens to you, consult your doctor. Also be on the lookout for pain, fever and / or foul-smelling vaginal discharge.

Clean the menstrual cups by boiling them, in order to sterilize them as best as possible. If even after washing, you feel that they have an unpleasant odor, it is time to buy another one.
