North Korea bans leather jackets for a (not so) strange reason

North Korea is banning leather clothing to prevent people from imitating Kim Jong Un's style.

According to Radio Free Asia, young people have been banned from wearing leather jackets and police have seized jackets from street citizens and shopkeepers. Citing an unnamed source from within the country, the newspaper reported that the move began after people began imitating Kim Jong Un's style.

The source added that leather coats also gained popularity among women in North Korea after Kim's sister, Kim Yo Jong, wore them.

"Leather coats began to be recognized as a symbol of power," the source told RFA, adding that this prompted clothing retailers to start importing synthetic leather to duplicate Kim's appearance.
