'We can not claim that nothing is happening': Poland refuses to play

Poland striker Robert Lewandowski has backed his country's refusal to play Russia in a World Cup qualifier next month.

Cezary Kulesza, president of the Polish football federation, said it was "time to act" after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

Lewandowski, the country's best Polish goal scorer of all time, said it was the "right decision".

"I can not imagine playing a match with the Russian national team in a situation where the armed aggression in Ukraine continues," the Bayern star wrote on Twitter. "Russian footballers and fans are not responsible for this, but we can not claim that nothing is happening."

Kulesza said Poland was in talks with Swedish and Czech football authorities to present a joint stance in FIFA.
