When it's too hot outside, the last thing you want to do is run to the nearest bathroom. Unfortunately, "summer diarrhea" happens to many people and is relatively common

What causes diarrhea during heat?

Believe it or not, the concept of "summer diarrhea" was actually much worse about a century ago. For example, according to a 2020 study published in the journal Explorations in Economic History, there was the case of the deadly viral and bacterial disease known as "summer diarrhea," which was extremely common between 1910 and 1930. These cases were deadliest to children, but eventually the disease faded as water purification and food safety measures became more robust.

Summer diarrhea continues to be a problem worldwide, according to the Journal of Clinical and Medical Images. The researchers explain that the causes of many of these diseases are not fully understood, but it is speculated that the conditions of the summer months are potentially related to the fact that pathogens can survive and spread.

When your body is faced with high heat and humidity, it can go into a "stressed" state to try to re-regulate core temperature. For some, this "stress" manifests itself in symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Some people also have what is called thermal hypersensitivity, which makes them more sensitive to increased heat and changes in body temperature, which can lead to more discomfort and increased symptoms.

It may also be helpful to know that hotter weather can make some people more susceptible to a number of digestive problems, so you may need to avoid other triggers on hot days. Other common causes of diarrhea include alcohol, spicy foods, high-fat foods, and high-fiber foods.

Remember that hydration is *very* important: You need to make sure you're getting enough water and electrolytes in your system.
