Famous singer says secret relationship of 35+ years 'saved his life'

Barry Manilow, known for hits like "Mandy" or "Copacabana", shared details about the secret relationship with the person who later became his husband.

The singer, 80, revealed how Garry Kief, his manager, whom he married in 2014 after a secret affair that lasted more than 35 years, saved his life during his rise to fame in the late 1970s .

“When my career 'blew up', it was just crazy. And, you know, when you go back to an empty hotel room, you can get into a lot of trouble if you're alone night after night,” Manilow said on "Who's Talking to Chris Wallace" on CNN Max.

“I met Garry just when my career was at its peak. And I didn't have to go back to those empty rooms. I had someone to cry or celebrate with," she said.

Manilow added: “I wish young people wouldn't have to go back to those hotel rooms alone, because you're going to find yourself in trouble. I was pretty lonely until I met Garry."

The singer has previously admitted the secret relationship. He also talked about the struggles after his 1964 marriage to high school sweetheart Susan Deixler. They stayed together for a year and the marriage was annulled in 1966.

He has admitted he was in love with Susan and that the failure of their marriage had nothing to do with his sexuality.
