We have all fallen once in our lives into what is otherwise known as a "food coma"! So, a big family dinner, a hearty breakfast, an outing with friends and after you've had your fill of delicious food, you're probably stuck helplessly somewhere in a chair or sofa to recover yourself and your powers. But, this time we are not talking about this kind of feeling, but about that typical sleepiness after eating food. Could this be a sign of diabetes?

The experts speak!

The two main types of diabetes

Diabetes is a condition in which your body has trouble using glucose for energy. When everything is normal, a hormone called insulin moves glucose into your cells to be used for energy. But people with diabetes either don't make enough insulin or their bodies don't use it efficiently. This can lead to dangerously high blood sugar levels. If diabetes is not managed properly, it can turn into a life-threatening condition.

Is sleeping after eating a sign of diabetes?

Doctors say yes, this is possible! Type 2 diabetes can make you feel sluggish after a meal because it interferes with the body's ability to use glucose for energy. "The brain's main fuel is glucose," explains endocrinologist Terri DeNeui. If the glucose doesn't get into the cells well, it will make you feel really tired.

Type 2 diabetes is also associated with a higher risk of sleep apnea, which can disrupt the quality of your sleep. Some diabetes symptoms such as frequent urination or headaches can make it difficult to get a full night's sleep.
