Many of those who have a lifelong "battle" with black spots or acne know that they are ready to do anything to remove every trace of them. There are many cosmetic products, home treatments or lotions that, thanks to specific ingredients, seem stubborn in the treatment of acne, but there is something that dermatologists are talking about recently: fish oil.
You may think of fish oil as a not-so-palatable supplement, but it has many benefits for overall health. Since fish oil has so many ingredients that do nothing but benefit the body, chances are it will do the same for your skin, right?
There are various face serums, blemish treatments and supplements that help improve the condition of acne. So is fish oil really the key to helping them disappear?
Brooke Jeffy, a dermatologist in New York, says that fish oil is a great source of omega-3 fatty acids and comes from oily fish like tuna, anchovies, etc. "Omega-3 fatty acids are essential acids, meaning they must come from the diet as the body cannot produce them. These acids are just as important for skin health," she says.
You can incorporate fish oil into your routine in several ways. However, the most common is to take a supplement. The taste and smell can be quite strong, but these are not reasons that should prevent you from consuming it.
Can fish oil help with acne?
Fish oil has several components that affect the health of the skin, from strengthening its protective barrier, to preventing inflammation, healing foci with problems, why not acne, according to a study published in the journal "Marine Drugs". The study says that the omega-3 content in fish oil can help reduce overall inflammation in the body.
"Because fish oil is rich in anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids, it can improve acne while also reducing inflammation in the skin," says Dermatology. Specifically, omega-3 fatty acids block a pathway in the body that generates inflammation. They work to stabilize testosterone and insulin, which tend to increase oil production, a key element that drives acne production.
How long does it take to see results after taking fish oil?
It can take anywhere from two to three months to see the effects of fish oil, but this can vary depending on the level of the problem and the type of acne you have.
