For several weeks, TikTok has "exploded" with videos presenting the trend otherwise known as the "cortisol face". Everything has to do with this determination and the 133 million views, it seems to be related to the influence of the stress hormone (cortisol) on the shape of the face and especially on its swelling.

The viral video posted by @itsbrookeelle has caught the attention of many chicks, but what exactly is this trend?

Dermatologist Hannah Kopelman says the "cortisol face" is a very real phenomenon.

"Excess cortisol, the hormone released in response to stress, can lead to facial swelling," she says. "This is because cortisol can cause fluid retention, which leads to a rounder, puffier face."

Cortisol comes from the adrenal glands located in your kidneys. It begins to pump when you are in a state of coping with stress, while it also affects various functions of the body, such as regulating metabolism, reducing inflammation and controlling the circadian sleep-wake rhythm.

This hormone belongs on the list of those necessary hormones, but bloating and other side effects can occur if you are under the effect of chronic stress from work, lack of sleep, excessive training in the gym or a poor nutritional regime. These factors can make you feel hostage to this chronic condition by affecting the way you feel.

How can you fix the effect of cortisol on your face?

To reduce the swelling of the "cortisol face," experts suggest reducing stress levels and taking supplements.

"Techniques such as meditation, yoga, regular exercise and sleep help manage stress and lower cortisol levels, leading to a more balanced appearance and less bloating," she says. "By managing stress, you prevent the body from producing excess cortisol, reducing fluid retention and the effect of a puffy face."
