It seems that many famous stars applied to star in the film Wicked, as the competition for the main roles was quite fierce. As we already know, the main roles: Elphaba, Glinda and Fiyero went to Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey. However, with Wicked being one of the most beloved musicals of recent times, the competition was definitely very strong. The film has been at the center of discussion for so long that it was initially believed that original Broadway stars Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth would reprise their roles for the film.
But who took part in the auditions from the well-known and successful characters around the world:
Role of Elphaba: Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga was first linked to the role of Elphaba when the film Wicked began to be discussed, under the direction of director Stephen Daldry. However, when directing the film passed to John M. Chu, the role of Elphaba was ultimately given to Cynthia Erivo.
Role of Glinda: Amanda Seyfried
Seyfried, known for her roles in Les Miserables and Mamma Mia!, was very "eager" for the role of Galinda/Glinda. While filming her Emmy Award-winning role in The Dropout, Seyfried was also auditioning for Glinda. She even said that she loved the role so much that she dedicated the entire weekend to the audition, calling it a huge sacrifice.
Dove Cameron
After playing Kristin Chenoweth's daughter in a version of Hairspray, Cameron seemed like the right choice for Chenoweth's Glinda. Even Chenoweth has endorsed her for the role. However, despite making it very far in the audition, Cameron did not win the role, but was very happy that Ariana Grande took it.
Renee Rapp
Mean Girls star Renee Rapp also auditioned for the role of Glinda. However, she was overjoyed that the role went to Ariana Grande, saying: “Ariana is going to be… can I say it? It's just going to be amazing."
Fiyeron role: Shawn Mendes
As unbelievable as it sounds, Mendes asked for the role. However, the role of Fiyero went to Jonathan Bailey.
Nick & Joe Jonas
Two of the Jonas brothers auditioned for the role of Fiyero. Although Nick has extensive experience on the musical stage and acted on Broadway as a child, both brothers were considered for the role, but it went to Jonathan Bailey.
These auditions show the strong competition for roles in the highly anticipated film production, and it's clear that many popular talents wanted to be part of Wicked on the big screen.
