Billie Eilish's name, like her voice, her style, her awards, and everything else, is part of what makes her so unique as an artist. So it's surprising to hear that Billie actually hated her name when she was little. The singer even admitted that she really wanted a "girly" name.
In an interview with British Vogue, Billie answered questions from other celebrities. The questions ranged from Chappell Roan, who asked why Billie gave up her long nails (answer: to play instruments), to Stella McCartney, who asked if she and her brother can read each other's minds (answer: yes, especially when they write music together).
And then came the question from Idris Elba about the name: "Were you proud of your name or did you feel embarrassed?"
Billie, who is named after her grandfather, was candid in her response, revealing that she “absolutely hated” the name Billie as a child. “I thought Billie was a boy’s name.” She heard that every day.
"I remember being so angry and all I wanted was a girl's name, like Violet or Lavender, something pretty and flowery."
She continued:
"It's funny, because right now there's no other name in the universe that could be my name but Billie. I love my name so, so, so much."
