John Cena initially humorously mentioned the fact that he had had a hair transplant, before admitting that fans had influenced his decision.
The WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment, the American company that deals with professional wrestling) champion gave an interview on ESPN's "The Pat McAfee Show." There, Cena did not hesitate to admit that he was bullied into getting a hair transplant.
He began by explaining that he had taken hair from the sides of his head and “planted” it on top, before revealing that it was “starting to grow back,” as happens during this procedure. After saying that he “listens to these idiots” — referring to the WWE fans who were behind him — Cena admitted that he had, in fact, felt bullied into getting the transplant.
“There you have it – hair transplant,” Cena said without hesitation. “There it is. I’m telling you. I have nothing to be ashamed of. I had a problem and I tried to fix it. That’s it.”
Cena added that he won't reveal who did the transplant until he has thick hair.
"I'm working on this. Work in progress," he said.
The 47-year-old said the relentless "campaign" of fans telling him to grow his hair out had become impossible to ignore.
"I just saw a lot of signs showing me my hairless side," he said. Cena admitted he had the procedure in November after being bullied.
"Thank you for being so mindful of my needs and emotions, because you tore me apart for a genetic problem that I cannot control," he said, addressing fans.
“You’re not being nice to me at all. I’m in the ring, trying to win, and I hear: ‘He’s got a bald spot!’ Hey, that’s not fair. I can’t control it. It happens to 7 out of 10 men.”
He continued:
“Any one of you could have pulled me aside. But no, all of you together yell and make me feel small and shame me. You don’t know how it made me feel. This is pure bullying. It’s not okay at all. Thank you for bullying me into a surgical hair transplant. That’s where you got me. I thank you for that.”
What started as a joke, which Cena apparently took in good sportsmanship, ended in some not-so-pleasant passive-aggressive comments.
